Re: Setting the book to music

Post by Chernaudi »

I don't know where this fits in(I've read much of this thread to get some idea about it, and I'm still confused), but I was wondering if or where some songs from like Pink Floyd, Within Temptation, or Lacuna Coil would fit in.

Like heres some Pink Floyd songs(with who wrote them in parentsis), and where they may fit in in the books(or perhaps the movies, too).

Echoes(Roger Waters, Richard Wright, David Gilmour and Nick Mason)-general catch all to the series. It has this kinda psychedelic, floaty, fantasy feel to it, and it kinda fits with the dark, fanciful nature of the books.

Wish You Were Here(Waters/Gilmour)-a perfect backdrop for the first half of New Moon, with Bella and her derpession at Edward having to leave her.

Sheep(Waters)-a perfect metaphor for Bella for the whole series and the danger she faces(just look up Waters' lyrics for this song, and replace the sheep, dogs and slaughterhouse/meat packing references with Bella and vampire references, and you'll get it).

And here's a song by performed by the late Richard Wright(Pink Floyd keyboardist) called Breakthough, and it'll fit in for either when Bella and Edward reunite near the end of New Moon, when they proposed marrage, or maybe even at the end of Breaking Dawn when the Volturi chicken out and leave in shame.

And as for Within Temptation, "Our Farewell" could fit in for when Edward leaves, for one example. And the Lacuna Coil song "Spellbound" could apply to when Bella and Edward meet in Twilight and Bella tried to find out for herself what Edward is.

Any thoughts, or am I in the wrong area or presenting this in the wrong way(as I said, I read though the post, and I'm still a little confused about this subject).

Hey you guys! Rose, I see you've done an amazing job lately.. I never finished my rereading of Twilight. It just got to hard to note while reading, and when I was finished reading I forgot which song I liked :? I can see that you've gotten a lot of help from Tia. Good arrangement with the boyfriend.. if only someone would do that with me :( your lucky Tia! ;)

I've talked to a few friends about the playlists, who might be intrested in rereading The Twilight Series with music. Then they could try to note a little a long the way..

Are you going through all the playlists again now?

I know it's too late and that you probably wouldn't used it anyway, but I gotta say it..

Near to you by A Fine Frenzy and
Almost lover by A Fine Frenzy

always makes me think of New Moon..

Good luck with everything, and PM me for anything

Bye, Vilde.. :D

That would be very helpful! Let them know to skip Twilight for now and that New Moon is kind of rough. Eclipse and Breaking Dawn however are ready for close inspection! :-) 8-)

It's funny that you should mention A Fine Frenzy - I know the singer (seriously, we've met and chatted about music, life, etc. Comes with living in LA. ) I thought I posted earlier in this thread somewhere that for the breakup scene in New Moon that both "Goodbye My Lover" by James Blunt and "Almost Lover" by A Fine Frenzy would both work for the same scene (see the exact starting point/cue per the original posting of the New Moon Playlist) as they are the same length and so you could really use either one. 8-)

"Near To You" I've been trying to find a home for. Any specific scenes (with page numbers) where you think it would fit?

As far as an update for anyone who cares, jettabugfox and I are working on redoing the Twilight playlist from the ground up. We have found a way to use all of Stephenie's songs and keep them in the same order on her list (with one exception). This may sound easy, but trust me it's hard to keep them in order when both of our instincts on certain songs are to put them somewhere where it would be completely out of order. It's forced us to really look at what was the point of the song being there in that order, etc.

Cymberlin (I think that's her name) on the boards and I had talked about this some time ago (the whole keeping it in the same order thing) and I still have her notes from where she thought everything belonged, so I'm hereby giving a shout out to her here and props/credit for her original notes on the subject.

Also, I have a song trade-out for the final meadow scene at the end of Eclipse that I need to post shortly after updating the grid on the prior pages here as well as updating Playlist.com. I hope you'll like it. :D

Hello everyone again!
Life interrupted me so I was busy. I can get another section of my review on Eclipse in a day or two. If I find the book that has my notes, we have 6 copies of each book somewhere. It was my birthday awhile ago and most gifts were Twilight Book Sets!

Hello Dreamer, yes I would have few notes if not for my bf. It's not much but RoseSpecialist and others get to see my thoughts or my bf's observations when I'm reading and listening to her Playlist setup for Eclipse. That might count for something I hope.
And you guys get to read things while waiting for New Moon lol.

Reading Eclipse with the Playlist is so emotional and I hope most (all) get a chance to read the books with her Playlists.
The part that I loved best while reading with her playlist was in chapter 17. Please Note, I cut and pasted parts that I
think best described the mood there. Without the music, we had SM's description to show us what was happening, and why
Jessica so overwhelmed, eager and babbled excitedly, oblivious to Bella's distracted mood.

The interior of the Cullens home had been transformed into a nightclub - the kind that didn't often exist in real life, only
on TV ...The music was infectious, the pulsing red and purple lights almost hypnotic. With the arrival of guests ...Alice
turned the volume of the music up. Much more explained what happened tho. Very descriptive and I thought I knew how Jessica could be that hyper almost.

Then I read it again with RoseSpecialist's Eclipse Playlist song for that part. The 91)365p-Have You Seen My Baby: song.
All I could say was wow we have to go there someday! lol I actualy said that to my bf. Yes I get excited easy but the songs draw you in so much it's unbelievable. I just love the books that much more I think, if that's possible.

Anyways another day starts, take care all ~Tia
Well that wasn't exactly the reaction I'd been going for, 123 p. of SM's Partial Draft.

Tia, thank you so much for giving us the feedback! It is really nice to read your reactions. It makes me feel like all of our hard work and hours on the computer at the expense of our husbands (and my kids!) are worth it. As I've said to Rose before, I would just do it for the two of us, but it is nice to have other people appreciate it!

And just kidding about the kids... sorta... ;)

Chernaudi, thank you for your suggestions. Our goal here is to match up songs to each scene so that while you are reading the books, you will have a complimentary song playing at all times. So, for each of the scenes you mentioned, we would have a song playing that matches the tone and sometimes even the words of the scene. I will make sure that we keep those in mind when we look at New Moon especially. Its hard to use songs as general "backdrops" like you mentioned when trying to soundtrack the whole thing, but you never know, we might find a spot to use one of them! We have to have the right song, with the right lyrics, the right tone, sometimes even in the right key, and have it be the exact right length within a few seconds. Which is why we are redoing Twilight and New Moon, LOL. Rose did a seriously awesome job to even begin to work on these playlists, and it boggles my mind sometimes that she was able to start it at all.

I was listening to the Eclipse playlist the other day (no book, just listening) and it seriously rocks just by itself. So if you are thinking of reading with the playlists and you haven't gone to Eclipse or Breaking Dawn yet, go do one of those first and come back for the revised Twilight and New Moon. We promise they will kick major tushy when we are done.

Keep the song suggestions coming! We are looking at all of them, even if we can't use every song. It is helpful to have more than we can use than having to scrape around for more...

--After a few songs, my boyfriend takes over the notes and lets me read.--
He won't start a note with capitalization or end one with punctuation marks,
stating it's just easier for us to figure out who wrote the note.
Mostly an overview, I tune out the world when reading and listening too often.

--Eclipse playlist review part 4 (part 3 and 2 on page 17, part 1 at page 16)--

Had to stop, music made that last few parts between Edward and Jacob intense. Looked thru the notes after and he did leave out some stuff so I wouldn't feel embarrassed I think lol.

---I think every song so far blends into the book easy. Both in mood and time constraints.
The 1 page per minute to song minute, is consistant throughout the book. Real easy to keep song track to page setup.
Have most lyrics for the ones they said might confuse me, so that helped keep any 1's from showing up.

As to the numbers after the songs:
For 3 It was like being there when listening and reading. Everything clicked, the tone and mood. I bounced thru the book.
For 2 It's really easy to get lost in the mood when the song and book team up.
For 1 it's the accent, placement of words in the lyrics or the fast pace of words that confused or overwhelmed me.
Take care ~Tia

Thanks jettabugbox, now that I know what this is exactly about. If I had to chose one song off of the top of my head to set to one scene, it would be Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb from The Wall album and film when Bella finds out that Edward has to leave her. Granted, the song in actual context as Roger Waters wrote the lyrics for depicts the character Pink entering a drug-enduced hallucination, but the reason for Pink turning to such a vice was his depression, in part caused by his wife leaving him.

Bella enters a similar depression because of Edward leaving her. And in time(almost instantly, in fact), she does become "comfortably numb" in that she drifts through her live until she becomes close to Jacob, and even then, she lapses back into her depression when Jacob tries to distance himself from her, as well as almost everynight when Bella tries to sleep. For those scenes, the solo from the end of Comfortably Numb comes to mind specifically for her dreams. Or maybe "Marooned" from PF's last new album, 1994's The Division Bell-it's an insturmental that depicts being marooned on an island alone, which is how Bella feels when Edward leaves(Interstingly, Pink Floyd lead vocalist/guitarist David Gilmour released a solo album in 2006 called "On An Island"-random fact, but I have no suggestions from it yet).

And since I suggested soundtracking the stories to music inadvertantly, there is one album that several songs apply to New Moon, especially in regards to Bella, and I don't know why I didn't think of this before. There's this old album released by late Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright back about 13 years ago called Broken China. I haven't listened to the whole album in a while(I rented it from the library that I used to work at several months ago). But I do have a specific song for a specific scene-"Breakthough", for when Bella and Edward are talking near the end of the novel in Bella's bedroom where Edward explains why he had to leave her, and they reaffirm their love for one another, and Bella completely(or at least as far as she'll be able to by the end of the story), returns back to normal.

I hope that I'm on the right track on this now-problem is that I don't listen to music typically while I'm reading the books(though scenes from the books come to me when listening to music sometimes), which I haven't done that in a while, too, though I've read them all. Maybe there should be a thread about trying to soundtrack the movies or story chapters/events and why the songs fit, which is what I think I may've ended up doing again.

But at least I hope that I may've left some suggestions for those willing to try them, and I hope that they work.

Uh, wrong thread, but I'll answer it anyway.

There are 3 songs that were used in Twilight that didn't end up on the CD version of the Twilight soundtrack but are available on iTunes as bonus tracks, but you have to buy the whole album on iTunes in order to get them. They are:
1) "Let Me Sign" by Robert Pattinson (yes, performed by Rob, himself) (plays during Bella's unconsciousness/dream sequence after the ballet scene and before she wakes in the hospital.
2) a track from "La Traviata" (the opera playing in the background in the kitchen scene at the Cullen house)
3) "Claire De Lune" by Debussy (in the movie, it plays in the scene where Bella is in Edward's bedroom)

Or did you mean New Moon?
