Setting the book to music

Post by Alphie »

I had a PM from a user who has actually set her reading of the book to the music of the playlist. It all sounds very technical, but interesting. I'm going to let her explain it to you all and then you can discuss if she's right and/or if any changes need to be taken care of. Have fun!

That's a really interesting idea. I wonder how that works. Hah. The only song that would be on my playlist would be "She's So High" by Tal Bachman. Whenever I listen to it, I think of the beginning of Jacob and Bella's friendship. :x It totally mirrors how he feels about her, but I couldn't put the whole book to a bunch of songs. That's really cool.

I think that would definately take some time but it could be worth it. Music always sets a mood for me and I write best when I am listening to music. I think it could be the same for me if I were reading too. Now I am curious... :?:

Yeah, I agree, that does sound interesting. Like the others have said, listening to music does set the mood and I find that when I'm reading a sad part, I put sad music on and vice versa. It just makes reading the book a bit more effective in my opinion, lol :D

It does work. I mean, every time I read the part at the end of New Moon where Edward and Bella are talking, the song Someday by Nickelback is one of the songs that brings me to tears whenever I read it.

So what's the big idea???

"Sheepish grin from ear to ear..."

You actually made a thread for me?? Geewilikers...

For those who might be curious, here is the original PM I sent the mods:
I have a mad-scientist "creation" that I wanted to get feedback on from fellow Twilighters:

I took my copy of Twlight and soundtracked it. (as in, it's done). I also have extensive notes for song/scene matches for NM, Ecl, BD and what there is so far of MS.

Here's what I did: Measured my reading pace and tabbed the book with appropriate songs at the right pacing so that as I read it, the "right" song plays and the mood of reading the scene is enhanced...

Example: I read at almost exactly 1 page a minute (makes measuring this out soooo much easier) and Chapter 23 (The Angel) is tabbed with "Sing for Absolution" by Muse. If I start the song at the same time I start the chapter, it matches almost exactly the length of the chapter and I swear makes me cry a little. (To summarize: The chapter is approx 5 pages long total and the song is 4:51, so it works out about the same. )

Now imagine that being done for the entire book (and eventually the entire book series). For the Twilight book soundtrack, I've already integrated all the songs in S.M.'s "official" playlist as well as the majority of the songs from the Twilight Movie Soundtrack.

No Britney Spears, Garth Brooks or Snoop Dogg need apply on this "playlist" (since I don't see any evidence from her playlists or character discussions within the books that S.M. or the characters would enjoy that kind of music, I don't consider it "canon" if that makes sense in a backwards kind of way. Only alternative, rock, and the other types of music that Stephenie has said has inspired her or she has mentioned as liking.
With all that said (*whew*), here's what I'm looking for:

1) Feedback on specific songs and reasons why they do or don't fit that scene (not just "I don't like it", but specific reasons) for Twilight only (for right now).

2) Suggestions of new songs that would fit specific passages in Twilight (I may or may not choose to use it, but I'm always taking on new groups that I've never heard of). 90% of my Xmas presents were iTunes gift certs or music, so I have some good resources at my disposal, so feel free to overwhelm me with "I love this song for page ### when ____ (context)_____ ". I'm using the 498 page American English paperback edition. I haven't checked to see if there's a different page count in the hardcover edition or in the special edition should you be lucky enough to have one.

That said... Anyone interested in participating? I'm only logged in nights and weekends, so I can't stay on and comment on each individual suggestion, but if you are OK with waiting for feedback, then I think we could all play well together...

As soon as I get some feedback saying "yes I'm interested", I'll post the playlist/what page/where on the page they start as a text list here. (Unless someone can show me how the heck to make the 128-song (so far) playlist public where you all could listen to it without paying, along with notes on where exactly those songs would cue up/start on the written page).

Any questions? :? :| ;) :) :D

I recently got the Twilight CD... which I really love but I don't understand how the lyrics relate to the movie except for the song Full Moon, Into Twilight, and Flightless Bird, American Mouth... not sure how the other songs relate to the twilight movie...

The lyrics don't necessarily fit. Realize that when you're soundtracking a movie, there's a whole different set of qualities you're looking for. The tone/mood of the song far outranks the lyrics. You could have a 8 minute heavy metal song epic covering a grand total of 1 minute of actual scene playing time. It just so happens that the scene is in Death Race 2000 and yet the singer is screaming about how much he loves his fuzzy kittens with a pink silk bow.
In a movie, tone is "boss" rather than lyrics.

While I've (possibly) got someone's attention: Someone remind me: Which scene in the movie is "Spotlight" by Mute Math covering? (I swear, I've seen the movie 3 times, but I just can't remember  )

Anyway, this thread is about soundtracking the books, not the movies.

I've got songs on the playlist that fit for tone and lyrics

and I've got songs that fit tone, but not neccesarily lyrics (it's these spots that I wanted to get feedback on).

Then there's songs where the tone fits so well IMHO that I don't really care about the lyrics.

if this thread ends up not going anywhere, I may move this entire conversation over to the thread about Stephenie's Playlists since this whole project is really just an extension of that.
