- Skeptic.. It’s probably not my favorite, but okay. I think it's replaceable.. if you find something better…

I liked this song, just as a song. I wanted to have something kind of easy-going and casual here since Bella's just doing normal human stuff like laundry, etc. I'm sure I could find something better...

10 *** 37 - “We lapsed back into silence” *** 3.57 *** Winter *** Tori Amos *** Little Earthquakes
- Yes! I like it. A keeper ;)
11 *** 43 - “Hello” said a quiet musical voice *** 4.17 *** Creep *** Radiohead *** The Best of Radiohead (Special Edition)- Should I comment on the green ones too?

Absolutely do comment on the green ones!
This one in particular is from Stephenie's Playlist, so it's still "non-negotiable" as far as taking it out completely, but I'm open to discussion on where it belongs in the book.

Wow! That was really interesting to listen to the music and read Twilight! I thoroughly enjoyed it! :D Thank you so much, all that work....well it hasn't gone to waste thats for sure, it was so great!
I found it was hard to give feedback, because I was reading/lisining so intently I forgot to write down when I really liked the song, and when I thought another song would fit better! haha But I went back and I have a couple of thoughts to share.

1 *** 1 – Preface *** 0.56 *** Interlude *** My Chemical Romance *** Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge
2 *** 3 – Start of Chapter 1 *** 4.25 *** Why Does It Always Rain on Me? *** Travis *** The Man Who
3 *** 8 - “We stared out the windows in silence” *** 5.13 *** One Headlight *** The Wallflowers *** Bringing Down The Horse
- These were incredibly perfect, the feeling was right on with what I had imagined in my head! :D

14 *** 57 – top of page (right after accident) *** 3.52 *** Tremble For My Beloved *** Collective Soul ***-This one was so perfect!!! ;)

44 *** 177 – He walked close to me to the door, still careful not to touch me. *** 4.52 *** Iris *** Goo Goo Dolls ***-I really thought this song was so wonderful, and I liked it when I read the part, but when I was realing the dance scene at the end, I actually thought it would fit better there or a song with a similar feeling might be better then 120 *** 487 – top of page (arrival at Prom) *** 2.35 *** Spooky *** Dusty Springfield *** Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and 119 *** 485 - “Humor me” he insisted *** 3.01 *** Better Version Of Me *** Fiona Apple *** Extraordinary Machine

46 *** 187 - “Tell me why you hunt animals instead of people” *** 2.53 *** Butterfly *** Weezer *** Pinkerton
47 *** 191 - “What were you thinking tonight...” *** 4.35 *** I Know *** Jude *** City Of Angels
-These were so perfect!!!! That part was so much more wonderful because of these songs!!! :D

54 *** 222 - “Really?” He was unconvinced *** 3.58 *** Dreaming *** Orchestral Manoeuvres In the Dark *** The OMD Singles
106 *** 430 – I held the phone to my ear *** 3.04 *** Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground *** The White Stripes *** White Blood Cells
-I didn’t particularly LOVE these songs, but I don’t know what to suggest…I guess I just felt they weren't perfect like everything else was!

Other songs that stood out as fitting really well and I particularly enjoyed were:
57 *** 231 – His questions were different now *** 3.21 *** On The Radio *** Regina Spektor *** Begin to Hope – I really thought this was perfect!!! Good choice!! :D
101 *** 411 – My guilt slowly subsided *** 4.09 *** Color Me Once *** Violent Femmes *** The Crow – Also good choice!
113 *** 458 – start of chapter 24 *** 4.5 *** Resurrection Fern *** Iron & Wine *** The Shepherd's Dog – Perfect!!!
121 *** 489 – Jacob put his hands on my waist *** 4.55 *** Luv *** Travis *** The Man Who – I really liked this song, and I thought it fit well but I was a little surprised because I had a whole different tone in my mine, but I liked it!!

Thank you so much for compiling the playlist!!! It was so great and I am alredy starting the New Moon playlist. I had never thought of putting music with books before, you had a great idea!

Wow! Thank you!!!!!! Another reviewer! Sometimes when I'm reviewing, I do the same thing - just enjoy it and forget to think critically. But if you enjoy it enough that you forget to pay attention, then that's a good thing, isn't it? It means its working well/blending!

"Spooky" was kind of an odd choice, I know. I liked the lyrics in particular with the parallel of Edward somehow talking Bella into the prom and her "I can't believe I'm doing this"/being dazzled into doing things. But I agree that the tone of the song is kind of out of place.

For page 485, I agree that I could probably find something better than "Better Version of Me". This is why I'm having everyone review/doing a Version 2.0.

Thank you!!

"Dreaming" is on Stephenie's list, therefore I had to find a place for it somewhere.

"Dead Leaves..." I actually already plan on replacing. I ended up using this same song in Eclipse for something else entirely, so by placing it in Eclipse (and not with the intention to have it as a reprise), I set myself up for having to replace it. So we're on the same wavelength here.

A note on "Luv" by Travis: "Luv" is also on Stephenie's Playlist towards the end for Eclipse.
I actually placed it here in Twilight not realizing that. When I started on soundtracking Eclipse, I realized that "Luv" also belongs in Eclipse just as well as a kind of reprise that, although it works, for the record, I totally set it up accidentally and unintentionally. Where in Eclipse, you ask? Page 599 at the top of the page to the end of the chapter. (The last part of the scene where Bella goes to visit Jake in his room after the big fight). So you have this slow dance song for Bella and Jake at the very beginning of what could have been the start of their "relationship" and it reprising at the "end" of their relationship (their last scene together in Eclipse).
(By "end" I mean, they see each other again in Breaking Dawn, but there's no hope really of a continuance of the idea of them as a couple in BD as Bella is married or pregnant or Jake has imprinted on Renesmee for all of BD). The idea of Bella going for Jacob in a relationship pretty much ends right there in that scene, though Jake doesn't really "get" it till he gets the wedding invitation in the Epilogue, IMHO.)
Note: I'm Team Switzerland.

Thank you so much for compiling the playlist!!! It was so great and I am alredy starting the New Moon playlist. I had never thought of putting music with books before, you had a great idea!
You're so welcome!!! Thanks sooooo much for the feedback! It's really super duper helpful!

Since you're moving on to New Moon, I should warn you: there's some links that I had to fix and I think there may be some substitutions on Playlist that I made without also updating the list here on the Lexicon (I think there's only maybe 2 of these).
One for sure is "The Long Way Home" that was supposed to be the version by Norah Jones, but that version had to get taken out of Playlist. I kind of like the version that Tom Waits did and it's close enough in length, that on Playlist I just did a straight substitution. There might be one other that is different but I can't remember off the top of my head what it is. Do let me know if you find any other differences between what's on the Lex and what's on Playlist.

Also, on New Moon, the song "Bent" by Rob Thomas (the acoustic version) has been taken out of Playlist. I'm trying to find a substitute for it as I don't really like the original full-band version by his band Matchbox 20. So right before "Unintended", just know that there's supposed to be a cool softer acoustic version of "Bent" by Rob Thomas there until I can sort out what the substitute is supposed to be... :-)

Re: Setting the book to music

Post by AllyC »

Ok, so I am completely addicted to this project now, and I have finished reviewing New Moon. Other then eating, getting a few hours sleep, and doing mandatory tasks, I have just been READING!!! I went to see my family this weekend and I actually didn’t see them…as I was otherwise engaged, but I told them why I was reading the books AGAIN and they were so funny! My mom was like “you joined a FORUM!! The books to MUSIC!!! ….Maybe I need to introduce you to someone…..” haha

Anyways I am glad my review was helpful!! It was defiantly fun to do! I must say that I did like Twilight a tinsey bit better, but I am way bias because I like the book Twilight way better then New Moon. But that’s not to say that I didn’t LOVE reading New Moon to music too!!!! Again you did a fabulous job!!! :D

So, the first song that really hit me was-20 *** Page 71 – top of page (Edward leaves) *** 4.18 *** Goodbye My Lover *** James Blunt *** Back To Bedlam – OMG I cried when I hear this and read the part! Hehe It was so completely perfect! (Sighs)

I decided I want to focus more on the blue listed songs (since there were no orange) rather than comment a lot on the songs that are already perfect/ pretty much perfect.

26 *** Page 102 – The thick haze that blurred my days now was sometimes confusing. *** 3.32 *** Nobody's Home *** Avril Lavigne *** Under My Skin – I liked this here. Yes it was a little bit of a departure for the total theme of the music, but I thought it worked.

31 *** Page 120 - “Bella, why don't you take off...” (at Newton's) *** 1.35 *** Untitled *** Better Than Ezra *** Deluxe – I thought this was an interesting choice. I don’t know why but I expected a song with lyrics, but I thought it worked.

33 *** Page 126 – After a minute of staring... (Bella takes motorcycles) *** 4.22 *** Unwell (Live Acoustic) (regular one works OK too, but I like the acoustic version better) *** Matchbox Twenty *** Matchbox Twenty : Exclusive - EP – Even though this song is in green I just can’t help myself from commenting that it was sooo good! :)

39B *** Page 152 – School was the opposite (realizing no one at school pays any attention to her) *** 4.32 *** Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of *** U2 *** All That You Can't Leave Behind I liked both songs, and it was hard to chose between the two options, but I think I liked “B” the most.

47B *** Page 184 – top of page (still learning to ride) *** 3.05 *** How Much Longer *** Eve 6 *** Eve 6 – Actually initially I liked “A” but when I went back I chose “B” . It was the drums!! It was great for riding motorcycles!

48 *** Page 187 – But this was only my first gear. *** 4.56 *** Big Empty *** Stone Temple Pilots *** The Crow – This song was slower than the previous motorcycle songs, so I felt the change in tone was kind of sudden. But I understand that this is where she hears Edward, but I felt maybe a different song would have a better transition?

There was no blue for a while, but lots of good songs/choices!

87 *** Page 353 – top of page (“I expected Jacob to meet me out front”) *** 3.38 *** Hurt *** Johnny Cash *** American IV: The Man Comes Around –This was actually one of the songs that really stood out for me! I really liked this one…it was SO Billy! :D

92 *** Page 369 – The last picture was the only one that stuck in my head. (What if there were more to Paris?/If Romeo was really gone...) *** 3.23 *** Bent (Acoustic) *** Rob Thomas *** ? You mentioned that this was not on the playlist, and it wasn’t also you mentioned 100 *** Page 400 – Carlisle was working nights in Ithaca and teaching part time at Cornell. *** 3.13 *** The Long Way Home *** Norah Jones *** Feels Like Home which wasn’t there either.

93 *** Page 373 – "I'm so sorry," I whispered. (Would it be so wrong to try to make Jacob happy?) *** 3.57 *** Unintended *** Muse *** Showbiz WOW what PERFECT lyrics! You know, I think it’s funny that some of the songs you have chosen are like they were made specifically for this series! I have noticed that a lot going through all the songs! Haha

108 *** Page 429 – I didn't think I wanted to know how bad the odds were *** 3.03 *** Fade Together *** Franz Ferdinand *** You Could Have It So Much Better – I thought this was good, but I just didn’t like the beat, I felt the tone was too upbeat? It just reminded me of a sad clown…I don’t know how I got that…. :|

125A *** Page 500 – start of Chapter 23 (Bella wakes up with Edward and thinks she's still dreaming) *** 3.22 *** Love Ridden *** Fiona Apple *** When The Pawn... /125B *** Page 500 – start of Chapter 23 (Bella wakes up with Edward and thinks she's still dreaming) *** 3.30 *** The Truth About Heaven *** Armor for Sleep *** What to Do When You Are Dead – Ugg..so torn! I really liked Fiona Apple because it was more sad and slow and really matched Bella waking up and thinking it was a dream and how she would get hurt but I thought it went more with page 511 when Edward tries to kiss her and she doesn’t let him for fear of more pain. The tempo for Armor for Sleep was a little faster then I was expecting, but lyrically it was perfect for this spot.

134A *** Page 538 – There was no sound, but suddenly he was there (Edward proposes) *** 6.28 (stop after 4.00) *** All I Want Is You *** U2 *** Rattle and Hum
134B *** Page 538 – There was no sound, but suddenly he was there (Edward proposes) *** 3.52 *** The Reason *** Hoobastank *** The Reason
– Again both GREAT! I liked U2 because it was slower, and I tend to think the slower the more tender sometimes. Also the lyrics all I want is you stood out which was fitting obviously. But then again, Hoobastank was more powerful so I felt more emotionally moved, plus the lyrics are so perfect for Edward! :D

On a different note, before Jake makes the change and he is still his happy sunny self when I was reading the book I had the song Lullaby by Shawn Mullins in my head. I listened to the song and I really like the chorus in terms that it is upbeat (like Jake at this point) and really sweet (Refresh: “Everything’s gonna be alright rock-a-bye, rock-a-bye”) I just could really picture this song for Jacob because that’s what he’s doing for Bella, trying to make her alright again. But after I listen to the song, I really think that it’s not good in the sense that he is talking for everything else but the chorus so it probably not the best choice.

I am so sad that I am halfway done now! But I am looking forward to Eclipse!! I saw that you are done the playlist, but I was wondering if you posted the list so I can follow along…I looked but I couldn’t find it, maybe I am blind. Thanks again! This was really great! :D

AllyC - Yeehaw!!!
I have a very long response to everything you've said in progress!

Just a quick note to everyone real fast:

New edits to New Moon as of today:

Edit as of August 17th, 2009: Found that substitute for "Bent" I was looking for that I mentioned earlier: Took out "Radio War" by Iron & Wine and "Bent" by Rob Thomas and put instead to cover both areas: "Bells For Her" by Tori Amos. This new song is long enough to cover both scenes.
I also took out "Radio War" because I found a better place for it in Breaking Dawn.

Also, substituted "Long Way Home" by Norah Jones with "Long Way Home" by Tom Waits. It's just a different cover of the same song.

AllyC wrote:Ok, so I am completely addicted to this project now, and I have finished reviewing New Moon. Other then eating, getting a few hours sleep, and doing mandatory tasks, I have just been READING!!!

Don't forget to have a life as well! Part of the reason the Eclipse and BD playlists took a lot longer is because LIFE intervened and decided that doing only this project and my 9-7 M-F job doesn't work. I'm on the tail end of cleaning up the lists so that they can be posted.

My favorite book is BD, personally. It's where all the plot strands come together, plus a happy ending is a truly wonderful thing.

So, the first song that really hit me was-20 *** Page 71 – top of page (Edward leaves) *** 4.18 *** Goodbye My Lover *** James Blunt *** Back To Bedlam – OMG I cried when I hear this and read the part! Hehe It was so completely perfect! (Sighs)

I thought this was great, too. However, if anyone's interested, an alternate to this same scene that is the same length is "Almost Lover" by Fine Frenzy. I consider it equally good and it's on many many people's playlist for this same scene.

I decided I want to focus more on the blue listed songs (since there were no orange) rather than comment a lot on the songs that are already perfect/ pretty much perfect.

Thanks! Remember that the blue = recent changes for those who may have already gone through it once. Green = I really like it for tone and lyrics and I'm not looking to replace it, per se. . Just regular black/purple = It works, but if you find something better that is the same length, I'm all ears.

Please note this song is from Stephenie's Playlist, so I can't really take credit.

Both options are from Stephenie's list.

I kind of wanted to slow it down a bit so the reader could focus more on the conversation. I've done this a few times where there's a bunch of fast/hard songs in a row and I purposefully put on the brakes a little bit, song-wise. I do this so the constant roar doesn't make you deaf, so to speak.

See my note above regarding these two gaps - now fixed!

Haha

Can't take credit! This one is from Stephenie's list! (((Go Steph!)))

I can totally see what you mean! (makes notes... *scribblescribble*)

I prefer "Love Ridden" for the tone of the song and "The Truth About Heaven" for the lyrics. The latter is from Stephenie's list!

I like both, too! Hence the reason I couldn't choose! "The Reason" by Hoobastank is from Stephenie's list.

I'll make a note of this one! I may end of using it in the Version 2.0!

I am so sad that I am halfway done now! But I am looking forward to Eclipse!! I saw that you are done the playlist, but I was wondering if you posted the list so I can follow along…I looked but I couldn’t find it, maybe I am blind. Thanks again! This was really great! :D

I have not yet posted the Eclipse or BD lists, but I will be doing so shortly. I am just finalizing the format on the grid and my notes so that everyone will understand.
One of my partners in crime is (heart)midnightsun(heart). (I don't know how to do the heart thingie, sorry... ). She PM'ed me a BRILLIANT idea. Jettabugfox and I have been using GoogleDocs to collaborate on the playlists. GoogleDocs has a neat feature where you can make your spreadsheet or other document "public" where you can give the doc or spreadsheet a direct URL so anyone can view it. So, in addition to copy/pasting it here, I'll also be supplying a link to the spreadsheet where it will be much more readable and make much more sense. Plus I'll be able to make a bunch of notes and not have it screw up the formatting horribly.

So... ((((((hugs)))))) and ***applause*** to AllyC and dreamer for all their hard work AND play on the reviewing!

((((((hugs))))) and ***applause*** to (heart)midnightsun(heart) for the excellent idea!

and as always ((((((((((hugs))))))))))) and ****uproarious applause*** to jettabugfox for her constant dedication to this project and for putting up with my... well, with me!

Next up - the Eclipse and Breaking Dawn Playlists!

Should I post these on a Tuesday night when no one is watching? What do y'all think?

Hi guys, just wanted to stop by and say thank you to everyone who is reading and commenting on everything that we have worked on. While Rosespecialist and I would do this for ourselves (as in, if we were the only ones who would ever read it), we really truly and honestly love that you are all interested in and appreciating what we have been working on. As is probably obvious, Rose (sorry, honey, I am not gonna write that out every time, too long!! ) does most of the work (as she mentioned, life has a funny way of intervening, esp. for me, as I'm a momma), so most of the credit goes to her. But I did want to point out that a large number of changes/placements that we have made have come from suggestions from people other than the two of us, so we really do love the feedback! I am not on here as much as Rose is, but you are free to send me a PM as well and I would love to hear from some of you! :)

((((hug)))) and HUGE thanks to the people who have already read through and commented on what we have done. We can't thank you enough!

So is that a "Yes, do it!" or a "No, wait!" ?

Jettabug - you are awesome and you know it. Clap your hands...

Oh, and Hyvanna? I've only made one exception to the "no Country" rule: Taylor Swift's "Love Story". (In Eclipse for a very happy-happy-joy-joy scene (though it's Alice who's jumping up and down in joy, rather than Bella)).
