It's disappointing that there were 4 books in the series, and all of them had meaningful covers except one! That really makes me mad, that SM didn't have a say in that cover. Someone just had to take over and make it look pretty, if not actually mean anything. DIdn't they know that all of us Twilighters prefer things to have meaning than to just look pretty?!? Those publishing people don't know us fans at all. :(

Anyway, here is my interpretation of the flower, just to come up with something cuz otherwise it bugs me that it has no meaning whatsoever and all the others do.

By this time in Bella's life, she is not as normal as she used to be, or could have been had she not met Edward. That is why the flower is white, like the innocence of Bella, but tainted with blood because she has already been through a lot, with James coming after her, and now with Edward leaving and her basically flipping out. She's a different person than she was before, still a delicate and fragile flower, but no longer unaware of the danger she is in by being around Edward. In the beginning of Twilight, she had no idea how she was putting her life in jeopardy all the time by being around Edward. Now, she does, and she's had to learn it the hard way, so blood infringes on her pure, white flower. However, the real problem is that Bella WANTS that flower to be all red, and Edward wants it to stay all white. When Edward leaves, he thinks that Bella's flower will turn white again, since he is not around to put her in danger, so he thinks. But Bella is a danger magnet, and the flower turning red, slowly but surely, is a foreshadowing as to what happens in Breaking Dawn to Bella, the newly become incredibly strong and beautiful red rose.

That's my explanation. Take it or leave it. ;)

Eclipse- Bella breaking free from her old life but but there is no clean break from it.
breaking dawn- Bella Vs. Bella
I had no idea what the Eclipse one was.. but this was good, I didn't realise. Makes sense now. Lol. I do love the first cover the best.. it's what drew me to buying the book!

Twilight- The forbidden Fruit

New Moon- Bella, the piece falling is her heart, the part that belonged to Edward detaching. The flower looks normal, but that piece of the petal is still gone, as Bella was in New Moon.

Eclipse- the fragile string between the two intact pieces of ribbon is Bella. THe larger part of the ribbon is Edward, and the smaller Jacob. She is trying to hold them together, as she says, force them to co-exist. And it is barely working, as with the small string on the cover, and in the book.

Breaking Dawn- In chess, if a pawn gets to the other side of the board, it can transform into the most powerful piece on the board, a queen. Bella gets transformed into a vampire, coming from the fragile human she was to the most powerful piece on the board, a beautiful, strong vampire.

I really like how Stephenie chose the covers to match the plot symbolically. I know that Twilight cover symbolizes choice, or "forbidden fruit", because Stephenie explained that herself. As for New Moon cover, I know that she didn't get a say in that one, but I really like it. I always thought it means something like Bella's torn happiness, or her bleeding heart after Edward left. Eclipse cover symbolizes an un-clean break, in Bella's case it means her life, her choices and sacrifices she couldn't left behind. Stephenie explained that, and Breaking Dawn cover, she said that the chess pieces represent Bella & Bella (I think we all know what which peice represents).

yeahhh that's what i interpreted for New Moon, to me when i looked at the cover after Edward left it made total sense. And as someone mentioned before it showed her fragility. A beautiful flower dying (the falling petal) and tainted with blood or however it was mentioned above. I just found the cover to NM to be so beautiful yet heartbreaking, which is essentially the story.

When I first saw the BD cover I was like "What?!" I didn't like it at all and just ignored it as reading the book. I eventually forgot about it and didn't remember to try to understand it. When I saw this discussion board, I was going to rant stupidly about how I didn't like the cover of Breaking Dawn. Now, after reading what it truly means, Bella and Bella, I like it. I still don't love it, but it just makes sense to me and I appreciate SM's artistic view on the cover. All I have left to say is "bravo!" It's a really great choice for the final book of Bella's perspective.

Whenever I see all four books lined up next to each other, I always think that Breaking Dawn's cover doesn't really go with the others. There's not enough red or something, I don't know. To me, it just seems like...I don't know, like it doesn't fit in. I think if maybe the front piece was red, and the pawn in the back was white, it might go with the others better. I don't know, I'm just rambling :)

Maybe thats the whole point. That it shouldn't go becuase in this book Bella becomes a Vampire and leaves her old life behind. Bella is reborn and we can't relate to her as much as we did. That might be the reason we didn't like the cover that much. Like we couldn't relate to it as much. or somthing along that line.

I like the cover now after Steph explained it. Before i was just confused cuase i didn't know what the cover meant. Now i do and it puts things in place for me.

I think that it represent Bella's heart... the one small petal falling represents her broken heart when Edward left, something is torn from her life, something is missing. The flower still look pretty and looked like nothing changed but we all knew that somehow something changed because we knew that one petal is missing even when Edward came back for her. err sorry for my English, im really not good at explaining things.
that's a really good one for NM! Though SM did say it had nothing to do with the story- it was just a pretty picture. But i'm going to have to go with your interpretation- lol it sounds much more deep and i don't like the idea of a cover "just cause it was pretty" haha.

As for eclipse i think it also had to do with Jacob...not exactly sure what though
I really like what you said about new moon too! but for Eclipse I think it's like how Bella was: She was being pulled in two directions but trying to hold on by every little thread at the same time. In the end though, she does have to pick a side and leave a part of herself behind.

I honestly pulled that out of my head though so sorry if it sounds so much alike
