Jacob explains this, I believe in New Moon with regards to Quil imprinting on Claire. He says it is possible for an imprintee to refuse the wolf, but why would you, all that devotion and love. Think about it, to have someone who would do anything for you, love you unconditionally, is completely and utterly in love and devoted to you. And I'm sure after Sam "wolfed-out", she discovered who or what he is and if she is up on the tribe legends she knows exactly what is going on. I'm also sure the elders (and I suspect Leah's mom, Sue) talked to her as well during her recovery. Doesn't make it better but it is something Sam could not help...it's not that he didn't care for Leah, but that he imprinted on Emily. Just like when Jacob first sees Renesmee, Emily became Sam's whole world.

I think a lot more people will like Emily now that the guide has come out. I know that this thread is allowed to contain spoilers to the guide, but I'm just going to warn you that I go into a bit of detail, just in case ;)

Firstly, we get to learn the history behind the Sam, Emily, Leah 'love triangle'. Even better, it's from all three characters views. Secondly, from what I've seen, I know a lot of people have problems with Emily because they see her as a little 1950's housewife, and that's putting it mildly. Yet we learn in the Guide that Emily actually has a job and one of the reasons she's so caring towards the other wolves is because of how nicely they treated her.

So, my question is, do you think the information in the Guide will make people warm up to Emily, or not?

I'm not sure. I think it has to do with why they dislike Emily in the first place. The only people I've come across who dislike Emily don't like her because of what happened to Leah. And I don't think the Guide redeemed her from her involvement in the Leah/Sam/Emily saga.

See, I couldn't really blame Emily, not when the nature of imprinting was revealed more in the books (not that they ever went into too much detail!). I didn't like Emily --otherwise I'd have to trade in my Team Leah membership -- but I couldn't really blame her either. I don't know why that is, as I seem to be the only one! Well, ok, there might be a little blame in there ;) , but I don't hold it against her. Maybe it's just that I think they did Leah a favour, she can do so much better than Sam!

I think you're right about the fact that it has to do with why people dislike her in the first place. It's just that I've seen a lot of people argue that SM loved Emily and hated Leah because Emily was model example of a mormon housewife (something I strongly disagree with) and that the fact that she had a job might make people warm to her a little.

That’s bizarre! I never knew there was an “Emily” issue amongst the fans, that there was resentment to her for taking Sam and hurting Leah.

The guide doesn’t attempt to explain Emily’s compulsion, but it does tell us it was definitely there. It obviously wasn’t the same as what Sam was feeling, but the guide makes it clear that after the imprinting Emily felt drawn to Sam, which was something she had not experienced before with him. I think there were definitely some parallels with Bella, especially the way Emily somehow instinctively knew not to divulge Sam’s confidences with her, the way Bella instinctively knew to keep how Edward had saved her from the van to herself.

What lead up to Emily and Sam getting together doesn't sit well with me. Emily gave Leah the impression she was refuting him but instead was courting him. The phrase "stabbing her in the back right in front of her face" comes to my mind. Emily didn't even tell Leah they were together. Leah found out from other people first. The whole situation should have been handled better from all three of them, but especially Sam and Emily.
