I think in the end, the people there did respect that it was his house. He built the place, before there was a need. He came up with the mirror, irrigation. He made life there possible, he was quirky but he knew how to survive. I think he was trusted for that. I think enough people would stick up for him, a mutiny wouldn't happen.
I thought he was sort of Bella for insightfulness. He was the guy who saw what no one else saw probably because he was willing to look. I think when he realized that Mel/Wanda was alone and had no good reason ( seeking or something ) to be there and basically put herself in danger and at their mercy. He thought there had to be something to that. It's like in Twilight, no one ever thought about looking into their eyes or asking their side of story, they just looked beyond it. Jared saw that she had jumped in front of him but ignored it. He caught all the little times she did stuff "out of character for an evil soul" and stood up for her enough to see if he could get to the truth.
