Re: Required School Reading
For summer reading this year, I was required to read Cold Mountain and A Lesson Before Dying. Ugh, I'm a big reader, but the minute someone forces me to read something, I lose interest.

I'm exactly the same. I guess you could say I'm a rebelNolitaFairytale wrote:Ugh, I'm a big reader, but the minute someone forces me to read something, I lose interest.
This term we had to read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Talk about weird. Talk about a sex and drug fuelled ride. That was some weiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrd stuff. At least the boys in the class enjoyed it.
Last term we read To Kill a Mockingbird and Othello. Both of which I really enjoyed.............i don't think anyone else in the class did though.
I guess i'm a nerd-rebel then

^ We read that in term 1! And studied Blade Runner with it.
It was a pretty cool unit.
We also did Othello, but last yearrr. And TKAMB in year 10.
We did King Lear this year for our Shakespeare,it was horrible.

Re: Required School Reading
Last year we had to do The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and The Field by some lad that I can't remember his name. That is the stupidest play ever.84 pages of two lads fighting over a field and it took us a whole year to finish it although I finished it in about two classes. The Outsiders wasn't too bad.

Re: Required School Reading
For our summer assignment, we had to read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. I was expecting it to be stupid and boring, like most required reading, but I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. It was very different from anything I've read and I like how society is portrayed, even if it's way into the future.
Re: Required School Reading
Wow thats very similar to what we're doing. I thought the different states would be different. Aparantly Blade Runner is considered too much of a "cult film" for us to study with it though, so we are watching Equilibrium instead. Funniest gunfights ever! and Christian Bale so i can ignore the lameness.Gabbie wrote:^ We read that in term 1! And studied Blade Runner with it.

Simple_love: You should enjoy TKAMB, its really a good book. Starts off a bit slow for those who aren't word fans but it has really good messages and themes. And many quotable lines to make essay-writing a breeze

I had to read Code Orange, and James Town, Blood on the river. Not the best books ever. I just imagined that the main character was really hot.
It worked for me. lol.

Re: Required School Reading
I'm the same way with the whole once-it's-assigned-I-don't-wanna-do-it thing. It's so true. I love to read but hate HAVING to read something. Anyway, when I was in high school this is what we had to read (and this is only what I can remember so it's give or take a few...)
9th grade
Animal Farm
The Odyssey
Romeo and Juliet
lots 'o' poetry
10th grade Honors English
To Kill a Mockingbird
Julius Caesar
even more poetry
11th grade Honors English
Antigone
Oedipus Rex
Oedipus at Colonus
The Scarlet Letter
The Great Gatsby
Breakfast at Tiffanys
Huckleberry Finn
12th grade-Advance Placement English
Othello
Heart of Darkness
Things Fall Apart
Pride and Prejudice
Macbeth
I know that there are more, especially from AP Eng. but I honestly can't remember them. But yes, if anyone had to read Heart of Darkness, tell me what you thought. Personally, I hated it but the rest were pretty decent.
