Hi, everybody! Its wonderful to see all of you writershere, as I am a writer myself! I've been writing sicne I was five years old, but i've only ever finished one orgional novel and tw fanfictions. I'm currently writing a new origional novel that's over 200 pages, and a harry Potter fanfiction on the side.

I've got a question; has anyone else here ever written something that was kind of fantasy, but had to be groudned absolutely in the bounds of reality? Does that question even make any sense?

~Rajani
Perfect sense! My main piece right now is based very loosely on my own beliefs as a metaphysicist. It's... fantasy in the sense that most people wouldn't consider it possible, and perhaps to some degree I'm stretching the truth, but it's still *plausible.* One thing I really, really liked in Stephenie's writing was that, though it was fantasy with the vampires and werewolves, she made it feel possible that you could really sit next to a vampire in school. That's how I've always written my stuff, so I was very pleased to find another author who wrote that way. Did that even make sense? :p

Hey everybody. :) Before the Lex crashed, some of the Twilight fans here made a writer's forum to kind of go in tandem with this thread. It's a pretty fun place, and frankly, I'm addicted. I don't know if anybody's posted the link yet, but, just to make sure it's still available...

Me as a writer...hmm...I write a lot of poetry and a little prose, with a bent for the supernatural. This summer I finished my first novel-length story (which is NOT fit for human eyes and needs any amount of editing), and I'm trying to settle on a good idea for NaNoWriMo.

As for the fantasy-grounded-in-reality question, well, does Harry Potter count? Is was the first thing that came to mind. The books may have been full of giants and dragons, but JK had to account for why we Muggles don't notice them from day to day. :)

I LOVE NaNoWriMo! This year will be my 3rd or 4th and as torturous as the month of November is, it's a good exercise in tenacity, dealing with stress, and totally giving in to insanity.

I'm working on something right now that actually started as my NaNoWriMo entry from 2006. I had to put it away because the characters railroaded me and took me to a place I didn't think I wanted to go with the story. So i dusted it off again a few weeks ago and guess what! They took me right back to that place, only this time, i didn't fight them and it turned out okay.

Hey! I just wanted to drop in and let anyone who might be interested know that I reposted my fanfictions on fanfiction.net for a limited time. I kept receiving e-mails begging me to repost them, so I decided to do this while I was still unpublished, but this will be the last time I do! You can find the story in my profile here: http://www.fanfiction.net/~seraphyn

Also, for information on my original novels, you can visit my website at http://www.sera-phyn.com or my blog at http://sera-phyn.blogspot.com. In both places I have a lot of tips for writers and information I've collected in my search for an agent for my book. Hope they help you guys! :D

If you can get your hands on Chris Baty's book No Plot? No Problem: A No-Stress, High Velocity Guide to Writing a Novel in 30 Days it is a great resource.

My only other advice is this: preparation is key. You can do an outline if that makes you feel better, prior to November 1st. You can have your entire story mapped out, just don't start writing the guts of it until 12:00.01. Make sure to take time to write something every day because if you don't it will pile up and you'll be scrambling at the end to make your word count before time's up. There are tools that you can use that can be found either on the nanowrimo boards or on the net in general that can help you track word count (i'm particularly fond of Excel spreadsheets, myself).

The BIGGEST thing i can impart on you is don't get caught up in the editing. Editing is for January. Just write, write, write. There is time after to fix any mistakes, continuity problems, ets.

I had to ask my friends not to contact me during the month of November as well because it cut into my writing time. November is a cruel month for everyone...you might feel like you're going crazy and your friends will definitely notice that you're not your usual self (whether that's normally sane or not ;) )

Oh, and keep lots of caffeine on hand.

Anyone else have any tips? I could always use some more!

never thought of something like that...and i could never make myself not to write :D
you're totally right with the editing tip it just holds you up

my tips:

choose a certain time every day to think about your story. my times are at night when i'm lying in my bed and in the morning when i'm waking up early. i think i'm using this time because i got used to telling myself stories when i'm lying in my bed when i was a little girl.

and i could never go without my best friend. she's a writer, too, and we're always reading each others stories commenting and loving it.
i think you really really need a person who likes or even loves your story but is also able to show you parts you have to improve. that motivates you to continue.

i'm going to have to rethink my thinking time this time around. i was recently diagnosed with ADHD and now that i'm medicated my brain doesn't run on high speed at night, so when I go to bed i actually fall asleep...I used to do my best thinking at night and now all i hear in my brain is crickets! ;) I am hoping, though, that with my new-found attention span that i'll be more productive this time around and won't be pulling all-nighters at the end to make sure i get my word count done.

I've started about seven on eight novels and never gotten farther than the first twenty pages on any of them. I'm even worse with fanfictions... I'll probably get two paragraphs out of those. I just get bored. The sad thing is, I'm a pretty talented writer (the one thing about myself that I'm really, truly proud of as far as talents) but I have this weird ADD-thing everytime I start to write something. I totally give up, and that's why I stick to poetry. It's shorter and I can actually keep my focus through the whole thing. But with novels, I don't even bother. I get a plot idea, I get really excited about it, I plan it all out, and then I start to write it... and I think, this isn't that interesting of a plot after all. It happens every single time.

I love the idea of NaNoWriMo, don't get me wrong, but as a college kid, how the heck am I supposed to write that many words when it falls square on the month before finals week? I mean... near the end of it, I just cannot spend time doing that sort of thing.

To everyone who has done it; how do you cope with it?

And Seraphyn! It's sort of tragic that once you're an author, you can't have your fanfiction up anymore. *Saves it all to her desktop!*
