OK Remmett, stalk away! I live too far from Middle Earth anyway. *Deep Sigh*

I'm not trying to make you mad. Legolas just happens to like skinny jeans. :D

Middle Earth isn't that far away if you think about it. Either imagine yourself there or move to Wales, which I'd like to do.
Or just live in Oregon, which looks EXACTLY like Middle Earth. Sometimes I swear I'm driving through Rohan when I'm out in the Gorge, and I totally expect Warg Riders to pop out and start eating people.

Jo, you may have just started a war with Remmet you know.
Either that or she is going to totally stalk you until she finds your friend.

We all like sci-fi, fantasy stuff or we wouldn't post here. These stories lend themselves to big themes and big ideas that take a while to grasp.
OK, so, what are the similarities between great stories like the ones we have discussed on here?
I can think of a few, but I will only throw out one, and then I would love your opinions...

Dr. Who, LOTR, and Twilight Saga all have as a common theme the sacrafice of one for the benefit of others (Star Trek, too, for that matter.) Why is such a theme so important to humanity?

I only just got "the doctor" reference...

On your question... You have to add Harry Potter to that list. He sacrifices a ton for other people, and the sacrifices and pain we have in life make us human, that's why its so important. Sacrifices come out of love- another common thread.

So all these make believe stories hit on the core of what makes us human?
Good answer!
Anyone else?

Well, yeah! Good stories can be a lot like real life, even if they're not "real life" stories. The Diary of Anne Frank makes most everyone cry because its a real life story of an innocent person who suffered a heck of a lot, which everyone (unless your Voldemort; sorreh, re-reading HP7 again) can relate to in some part, so it awakes our emotions. Yet so does Lord of the Rings, which doesn't even take place on Earth and most people aren't human, yet it still has a lot of humanity and their best and worst in it. That's why we love it so much, because we can relate to it, and also escape into a world different from our own, with different trials, and the same emotions.

AH! Giant post!

Openhome, you are my idol, my inspiration and my brain twin.
I just want to add that you're a kickass discussion starter.
well done you.

So, back to the topic at hand. wouldn't you have to first off, Identify what our original ethics are in terms of humanity as a whole.
In other words, what do we think makes a human human?
then, we debate how these factors link into our beloved make belief and any excessive factors that they possess which can defy the human purpose and nature.
from there, we can now use our new definition of humanity and cross reference it with the general perceived view (what we thought at first)
it might be interesting after further study to analyse what stay as silent nature and what are agiven.

I probably thought this through too much but what do you think?

I'm a big fan of Plato's replubic and it just sets me off in this kind of mood.
You guys have to read his primary debate and definition on 'what is just'. Magnificent.
