Okay, this is going to be a long list--when you're a film enthusiast, that's how it tends to be. To provide some order, I've decided to break the list down, sort of by generations.
1. From the Golden Age
Actors: Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Henry Fonda, Cary Grant, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum, Robert Ryan, James Stewart--all leading men, more or less. Add to this a few of the great character actors: Walter Brennan, Elisha Cook, Jr., Barry Fitzgerald, Sidney Greenstreet, Ben Johnson, Peter Lorre
Actresses: Jean Arthur, Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly, Carol Lombard, Ginger Rogers, Barbara Stanwyck
And an actor and actress who seemed to always belong on screen together: William Powell and Myrna Loy
2. Established Stars, the Older Generation
"Older" means born before me, more or less
Actors: Michael Caine, Robert DeNiro, Robert Duvall, Gene Hackman, Tommy Lee Jones, Val Kilmer, Ian McKellen, Kevin Spacey, Denzel Washington, Bruce Willis
Actresses: Jodie Foster, Anjelica Huston, Diane Keaton, Frances McDormand, Michelle Pfeiffer, Meg Ryan, Susan Sarandon, Madeleine Stowe
3. Established Stars, the Younger Generation
Actors: Daniel Craig, Russell Crowe, Matt Damon, Benecio Del Toro, Robert Downey, Jr. Brendan Fraser, Jude Law, Clive Owen, Chris and Sean Penn
Actresses: Patricia Arquette, Drew Barrymore, Kirsten Dunst, Salma Hayek, Keira Knightley, Diane Lane, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Piper Perabo, Natalie Portman, Keri Russell, Rachel Weisz, Reese Witherspoon
4. The "I Hope to See Them Make it Big" List
Actors: Charlie Cox, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Alessandro Nivola, Jimmi Simpson
Actresses: Jordana Brewster, Melonie Diaz, Summer Glau, Ashley Greene, Rebecca Hall, Nikki Reed, Nora Zehetner
I will probably have several occasions in the next few days to smack my forehead, say "how could I have left him/her off the list," and come back and edit this, but that's it for now.
