I love Back to the Future, but I never thought of it as scifi. Interesting.
I think the time-travel element is what would qualify it as sci-fi.
My favorites would include
Star Wars (which I refuse to call "A New Hope")
The Empire Strikes Back
Star Trek 2,3 4 and 6
Blade Runner
Serenity
Spacehunter
Battle Beyond the Stars
The last two may not be familiar; they were part of a flock of cheapie sci-fi films made in the early 1980s to try to cash in on the Star Wars craze. I like these two despite their obvious flaws; Spacehunter has a quirky charm and a spunky adolescent heroine in Molly Ringwald, while Battle, a Seven Samurai film in outer space, benefits from a John Sayles script.
Edit: Adding two more, both of them sort of "period sci-fi" films, set around 1940 but with ahead-of-that-time technology:
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
The Rocketeer
