So what did you think of Jane's little visit to Victoria and Riley. Do you think she also knew about Diego and Bree observing?

I wasn't surprised at all. We always knew Jane was devious and the Volturi's timing was a little too perfect at the clearing. They would have been quite delighted if the Cullen numbers had been reduced. I don't think they did know about Bree & Diego unless torturing Bree was a warning to keep her mouth shut

Before reading Bree's story, I believed that Jane know something but wait until it was too late to intervene. Now that visit put thing on other perspective…

Was a decision form the Volturi (and Aro) or an idea of Jane?

Aro always pretends to be Carlisle’s friend and we know that Jane hates Bella and may considers Alice and Edward as a threat for her position in the Volturi’s guard.

On the other hand, Edward, when he went to Italy, gave Aro some clues on how powerful the Cullen’s coven is, and how Carlisle has succeeded on his attempt of living without killing human. At this point, may Aro have been so jealous to let this little army split the Cullen’s coven, broke their power, their deviant way of life and hope that some of them will join the Volturi?

And for Diego and Bree… I don’t believe they will have long live if Jane know they spy her...:?

I really like that it is clear that Jane is the one in charge. You do get that in Eclipse, but you see it even more here as the others are silent.

I was hoping Jane would have got a Best Villain Nomination at the MTV movie awards. She is not one to be messed with!

Aro's always been jealous of Carisle and Jane knows it. Maybe she was secretly hoping Victoria would be able to pull this off by killing Carisle clan. That way she could somehow tell Aro she was involved and try to be come a favorite of his . to Jane maybe this was a trial one to see if creating a army of newborns could take down Aro and the main Volturi so she can take over.

yeah im really happy that bree thought the whole story to edward while she was talking to jane. i wish that stephanie would have mentioned the interaction between bree and edward in eclipse. actually knowing that the volturi was kinda working with victoria makes that much more evil...

I find this thread's title amusing- there are a lot of adjectives I'd use to describe the Volturi, but "clueless" is not one of them. :)

We already have a sense in EC that Edward knows something more than what Jane is letting on (when they appear post-showdown with the newborns). Seeing things from Bree's PoV just clarifies things.

As to whether this was something Aro had planned all along or something Jane decided to do... That's more up to interpretation. I don't think Aro would have known what Victoria's goal was- or even who she was- without having someone there already monitoring the situation. If Jane reported to Aro at some point, either one could have come up with the plan to "let things fall as they may."

I've always felt that Aro's warm feelings towards Carlisle were overplayed, but genuine somehow. Like, he actually valued Carlisle's life. If for no other reason then because he found the idea of a vegetarian vampire amusing. So while Jane's involvement was not too shocking, the fact that Aro would be aware and even ENCOURAGE Victoria's wave of destruction leave a foul taste in my mouth.

Aro is a cunning man. Through all his dealings, in the back of his head he is always thinking about what he can gain from it. We see this most noticeably in BD, of course, but it's a known fact that Aro is a manipulator. So my question was: what can Aro gain from Victoria possibly wiping out the entire Cullen Coven?

Some might say that he gets rid of a potential threat in the Cullens, but did Aro ever really see them as a true threat before BD? If he had wanted to, he had the perfect excuse in NM to do away with the two most powerful Cullens but he choose to let them go? Why? He spared them on the hope that they could eventually be recruited. Aro's ego would not allow him to even entertain the idea that the Volturi could be destroyed or even that another coven could be a threat - he sees all powerful vampires not in his coven not as the enemy but a potential recruit.

So why would he allow Victoria the chance to wipe out what could be a treasure chest for Aro? Simple: he did not think Victoria's army would stand a chance against the Cullens. Therefore it was Jane's wish that the Cullens be destroyed, not Aro's, and thus while on a mission for the Volturi, Jane's visit to Victoria was her own device. Jane was not going rogue, persay, but merely encouraging Victoria's revenge on the hope that a few of the Cullens could be destroyed for her own pleasure. While Aro would no doubt see this in Jane's mind, his confidence that the Cullens would survive and his own fondness of the little vampire would stop him from punishing her, i think. [/tangent theory]

I see your theory and propose another:

Aro wanted Alice and Edward, yes. This we saw in NM. You ask what he could possibly gain from a fight with the Cullens; I propose that, had Victoria's army succeeded in harming or destroying any of the Cullens, the others may become so despondent as to actually willingly join the Volturi. And Alice and Edward being what they are, well, there's a very high probability that they would actually survive even if the others did not- which means it (letting Victoria have her way and attack) was an acceptable risk.

I do not see Jane wishing for the Cullens' destruction as something she would want. In all honesty the only person that ever irked her there was Bella. I could see her wanting Bella to be killed, but I don't see her extending that want to the rest of the family.
