This morning I was listening to a Twilight podcast from about a year ago (almost to the date). At this point, Breaking Dawn hadn't been released yet; SM was still in the editing process. I don't know the exact source at the moment, but SM did an interview in which she was asked how long she would make the series or how she'd wrap up the series. I don't remember her response verbatim, but she mentioned that she had an outline of ideas for a 5th and 6th book. Does anyone know anything about this? BD ends fairly definitively in my eyes, so does that mean she put those ideas into BD, or is she still planning for a 5th and 6th book, even if it is years down the road?
Here's your answer according to http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/bd_faq.html
Why did you decide to end the saga?

The Twilight Saga is really Bella's story, and this was the natural place for her story to wind up. She overcame the major obstacles in her path and fought her way to the place she wanted to be. I suppose I could try to prolong her story unnaturally, but it wouldn't be interesting enough to keep me writing. Stories need conflict, and the conflicts that are Bella-centric are resolved.
Thanks for that. I already knew this part, but the interview where she mentioned the outlines for a 5th and 6th book was before she had finished BD. I was wondering if she decided mid-BD that she was going to end the series for good and incorporated her ideas for these books into BD, or if she still has these plans on the back burner. I'm searching for the interview as I type this. Also, some of the things I am reading are saying that Midnight Sun is the 5th book, but I don't think it is the 5th book she was speaking of, if that makes sense. At the point of the interview, she was already writing Midnight Sun. The 5th book she was referencing was merely a thought in her head.
So, I finally found the interview I mentioned.

TM: Do you think you will write more in the Twilight series? I have a minor crush on Jasper. I just find him adorable, in a Matt Damon in Bourne kind of way.

Steph: I can't say for sure. Right now, I'm seriously burned out on vampires, and I still have Midnight Sun to go. Plus there is all kinds of behind the scene publishing politics with this series that sucks some of the fun out.

But could I really leave them behind for good? Probably not. I assume that after some recovery time, I'll revisit the Twilight universe. I have a detailed outline for a fifth book, and I finally figured out how I'd end book six

The way she responds to this question makes me think that she did not consider Midnight Sun as the fifth book. Does anyone else get that impression from this quote?
I agree with you. Especially after reading from this interview.
Stephenie: The series at book four, and Midnight Sun kind of like book one point five. Book four will pretty much, it will be the last time Bella would narrate *crowd whines*, but if I wanted to go forward. The stories couldn't go on forever. If they did - no, no, no, if they did it would get old. Bella and Edward would have the same problems in every book and they overcame it and then faced the exact same thing again, it would get really old. There comes a time when the story needs to end. There are other stories with other characters. I might go there, I might not. There are some other things I'll do first, so it wouldn't be, like, right away, but I do have outlines for five and six.

I don't want to sound mean or anything bc I do love the Twilight series but does it feel like Stephenie Meyer is a bit...whiny? Well, not whiny like a kid but like when Midnight Sun got leaked, I understand her feelings and everything but it just feels like she cares too much about what people say. In almost every interview I've read of hers, she always mentions how she can't always have things her way as she has editors who want to cut this and that out but while I know Editors are there for a reason, I feel like she maybe she gives them too much rein?

^^I kind of feel the same way. and yeah there are editors for a reason, they cut things that don't really add to the story as a whole. there are many more things I would say but I might be burned at the stake for it. I like Twilight as a story though, don't get me wrong in any sense.

^^^ You're welcome. I don't post much. I'm glad I could help. :)

I have a question. I'm reading Eclipse for the 3rd or 4th time and on pg 199 when Edward comes to Bella's after Alice has dropped her off from the slumber party it is obvious when Bella opens the door that Edward has already picked up the scent of the other vampire from around the outside of the house --

"I pulled the door open with a big smile on my face. Edward's golden eyes were wide, his nostrils flared, his lips pulled back over his teeth." then he has her stand still while he flies around the house checking it out.

I wondered as I was reading this time why he waited when he caught the scent outside and knocked on the door and waited to be let in instead of immediately going up to her room and flying around the house checking for the intruding vampire that way. Thoughts? What am I missing?

Um. . .I think making sure she was okay already.
That's what I think. Maybe he though it was a different smell too.

Are you the one I sent the PM to about quoting? Did you get it?

I have a couple of questions about BD. When Jacob tells Charlie about his transformation, and invites him back to the Cullens, 1) does he (Charlie) realize what Bella has become and 2) does he realize that Renesme is Bella & Edward's? I've read it 2x now and just can't put my finger on it.

sorry if its been answered on a different post....I've looked but couldn't find it.

Thanks!!

He doesn't realize what she's become, just that she's different.

About Renesmee, there is no telling, he may think yes she's Bella and Edwards based on Bella's reaction and also she has a lot of traits that come from both Bella and Edward.

I think he wanted to see where the scent was left at for clues, not searching for the actual vampire. Obviously, it was left in Bella's room but at the time being, Edward is thinking that it must be the Volturi coming to check on her and he is trying to prolong her human life as much as possible. Edward would know if a vampire was there. He'd be able to hear his thoughts. And lastly, he is way more responsible than that. Especially with Charlie being there, he's not going to do anything rash unless he knew for a fact that a vampire was hiding somewhere in the house. He'd protect Charlie bc he means alot to Bella but he didn't sense any huge danger there to not be able to leave Bella alone for two seconds. We know that when Bella is highly at risk of another vampire, Edward won't leave her side for anything.

1)Charlie realizes that Bella has drastically changed but ignorance is bliss in his case. He doesn't know what she's become but he does see the changes and knows that she's not the same anymore. Remember in the book how humans subconsciously shy away from vampires without knowing what they really are, but they know enough to know that they need to stay away? That's the feeling Charlie has with Bella (he's all tense) but this is still his daughter so he'll work it out to keep her in his life on a "need to know" bases.

2)He definitely knows that Renesmee is Edward's and Bella. After most of the shock is gone, he can see that she looks alot like Bella and Edward both.
“Love you, too, kid. Whatever else has changed, that hasn’t.” He touched one
finger to Renesmee’s pink cheek. “She sure looks a lot like you.”
I kept my expression casual, though I felt anything but. “More like Edward, I
think.” I hesitated, and then added, “She has your curls.”
Charlie started, then snorted. “Huh. Guess she does. Huh. Grandpa.” He shook
his head doubtfully. “Do I ever get to hold her?”
(Beginning of chapter 26. Shiny, BD)

He just can't figure out how in the heck did the whole pregnancy and "three month old" baby happened in such a short time lol.

Thanks for the help with the BD questions!

Regarding the Eclipse question: I agree-Edward knew that there was no immediate danger (no vamps in the house), and first and foremost wanted to make sure Bella was alright.

Plus, it's daylight. There are possible human witnesses around other than Charlie. He can't just go climbing around the outside of her house, somebody may see him jump into her second story window! And as was said earlier, he knows the immediate danger is gone, so he tries to maintain protocol by knocking to give him entry into the house. He can race around inside the house cuz he's knows Charlie's glued to the TV and oblivious.
