In my opinion, the pregnancy part was brought in a bit too soon and put way too much emphazis on and then blown over too quickly (had I had it my way, they would've rmeoved the child and out it in some freakish tank with blood... but that's pretty gruesome). What surprised me about it... hmm... I guess it was the vampires-can-reproduce-with-humans thing. Vampires = dead? Or is it Vampires=mutated humans?

OMG, I couldn't have said it better myself!!

a couple hundred pages on the pregnancy... it was annoying...
then SM used endless and meaningless dialogues between Edward and Jacob (or any other character) to fill the boringness of the whole pregnancy period.

Another thing worth pointing out is that according to SM description of the vampire anatomy, female vampires are non-human and male vampires are kind-of-human. I mean, WTF????

So female vampire cannot have babies because their body won't change since they have become stones (stones don't have monthly period, nor can their body change to carry a baby)... ok, I buy that.
And male vampires are stones just like female vampires but their bodies are producing sperms....Hm????

I mean, BD is my favorite book from the saga, but there's just some little annoying details that bug the hell out of me!

They way Carlisle talked about DNA and chromosomes it made me think they were more mutated than dead -- sort of like how the wolves have a mutated gene.

I agree with Lady4String. They mutate and become a fixed version of their previous "living" selves. They dont become "dead" per-say

ie - A female vampire can no longer go through a monthly cycle, (Another example there hair is "real" but if they cut it,it wont grow back etc)

I dont think the male vampires "create sperm" it is the sperm that was already in the bodies when they were changed.

Technically if they were to mate with lots of human women they would only be able to create so many offspring. And probably likewise when they are "with" their female mate; after x amount of time they will stop ejaculating because the sperm will have run out.

Presuming Edward has never been with anyone (as he states in Eclipse) it stands to reason theres strong chances of Bella getting pregnant!

I agree with everything except that male vampires have the same sperm as when they were human. Because Stephenie put this up on the BD FAQs on her website:

A fluid similar to the venom in their mouths works as a lubricant between the cells, which makes movement possible (note: this fluid is very flammable). A fluid similar to the same venom lubricates their eyes so that their eyes can move easily in their sockets. (However, they don't produce tears because tears exist to protect the eye from damage, and nothing is going to be able to scratch a vampire's eye.) The lubricant-venom in the eyes and skin is not able to infect a human the way saliva-venom can. Similarly, throughout the vampire's body are many versions of venom-based fluids that retain a marked resemblance to the fluid that was replaced, and function in much the same way and toward the same purpose. Though there is no venom replacement that works precisely like blood, many of the functions of blood are carried on in some form. Also, the nervous system runs in a slightly different but heightened way. Some involuntary reactions, like breathing, continue (in that specific example because vampires use the scents in the air much more than we do, rather than out of a need for oxygen). Other involuntary reactions, like blinking, don't exist because there is no purpose for them. The normal reactions of arousal are still present in vampires, made possible by venom-related fluids that cause tissues to react similarly as they do to an influx of blood. Like with vampire skin—which looks similar to human skin and has the same basic function—fluids closely related to seminal fluids still exist in male vampires, which carry genetic information and are capable of bonding with a human ovum.

So basically, she's saying that vampires males do create new sperm in their vampire bodies.

From what I understand, it's not NEW sperm... but whatever sperm Edward had before he was changed, he still had. But that it's now mixed with the venom thus creating a baby. So basically, if Edward wanted to (not that he ever would), he could go out and impregnate several women and have several children with those women... but once the sperm that he had in his body at death is used up... he's no longer fertile. And since we know Edward has been such a good boy... he must have had a good bit to impregnate Bella.

Ahem... he wouldn't exactly have to BE with someone to waste that... er, well.. sorry, I just couldn't help myself really.

Anyhow... back to topic, I'm not fond at all of the pregnancy or having a baby and BD going all parental happiness and stuff. It all went too fast I think.

I agree with you about the... uh... yeah. But, I think Edward is not realistic as it is... so it's very possible he never, um... exersized that alternative.

And no, I didn't like the whole baby thing either. We spent three books getting to know Bella and then all of a sudden she changed so much, so quickly in BD. I know SM wrote BD before NM and Eclipse-- and I think you can tell by how weak it actually is in comparison.

That makes me wonder how Joham was able to impregnate all those women. He's one fertile vamp. lol!

I don't mind the pregnancy plot so much except with how short her gestational period was. I know SM needed some drama and so forth though.

Well, my understanding of that quote was that since the vampires made the lubricants for their eyes, it meant they made their sperm. *shrug* Also, Edward I wouldn't doubt would still have his human sperm, but Joham had 4 kids, and he probably didn't impregnate with one shot most of the time, and who knows how many women he's tried to before?

I loved the pregnancy. I may be the only one, but I don't care. Bella seemed to just mature a lot more now that she was a mother and totally stood up to everyone. It was awesome!

I agree with debussygirl in that Bella did mature after the pregnancy which I did like, but it was still a surprise to me when Bella fell pregnant as I had just assumed Edward couldn't father a child, but I was wrong. Still think it was a strange avenue of SM to go off to though
