carlisle and esme dont try and change rose to be a selfless creature, they accept her for who she is and understand why she is the way she is, rather than trying to make her into someon she is not.
sure, they have probably influenced her in many ways over the decades. she may have been more selfish when first changing into a vamp. - we, as readers cannot see this, as the book only goes for the space of a year or so, and the only brief history we delve into is character storytelling.
no one's upbringing gives them an excuse to be selfish. edward was raised a certain way too. he was raised with the thinking that women were helpless creatures, that needed to be protected, that couldn't vote. that segregation was okay. many many things that just aren't good. however, is edward a sexist racist pig? no. he is not. he may have been when he first met carlisle, though i doubt racism really caught on with edward, but he learned from his surroundings and the people around him and his experiences. rosalie has spent enough time not being the most beautiful pampered pretty girl in the world that she should know better by now. but she is essentially a self-centered creature, and she doesn't give others enough thought to consider how they feel, how she is treating them, how they should be treated, etc. and she's too arrogant to believe she's wrong
what time has rose spent NOT being the most beautiful creature in the planet? when she became a vampire she was even MORE beautiful than before! and rosalie is not racist either....so i have no idea where this argument is heading. Edward can be argued by some (not me!)to be very anti feminist with his treatment towards bella, and arrogant also, so he too, brought his old life experiences with him to vampirism.

thank you! - i think!

ok so i might make some people mad but i am not sure but we will see. so here is how i see it. for some reason rosalie hates bella so much and no one really knows why......well her story is omg i was soooo pretty and i could have been in a loveless marriage that my parents set up for me becacuse we want some more money blah blah blah then he raped me while he was drunk. yes that is horrible and i feel for anyone that it has happened to. but why hate bella>?? what did she ever do. nothing. she loves edward so unconditionally she would sacrafice EVERYTHING for him. and rosalie is mad about that?? ok. i dont get it. sometimes you just fall in love and when it happens there is no going back. so just because you didnt live the ideal human life why make someone else feel so horrible for wanting a different life to be with the one you could see yourself with forever......literally. so i dunno it seems like rosalie is jealous that in her human life she never found the true love that she so longed for an now that bella has she is jealous and doesnt want her to feel like that??? maybe? i dunno though i would like to know what other people think of my opinion. if you think i am totally crazy i really wont care, just tell me.

I started to see a bit more depth to Rosalie's character in New Moon when she explained why she voted no to Bella becoming a vampire. Her story in Eclipse finally brought everything together for me. Here was a girl who had every superficial thing she was told she should want but it was all empty. Her fiance didn't love her, her beauty and money didn't bring her happiness. She looked at her friend and saw true love and happiness and that did make her jealous. But she still saw hope. She could marry and have babies. She could raise and love those babies and, through her children, finally experience the love that she craved.

Then all her dreams and hopes were shattered. She clung to her anger and her pain as a means of dealing with her new vampire life, a life that didn't hold the same kind of hope her human life had. Being rejected by Edward just added on to the pain. She couldn't find love in either life...until she found Emmett.

Being human and having babies was so important to Rose that she just couldn't understand how Bella could give that all up so quickly and easily. And it hurt Rosalie to see something that she wanted so desperately being tossed away (in Rose's opinion) so carelessly.

I always liked Rosalie, it was easy for me to see her point of view after Edward told Bella she was jealous of her.

My point stands.

I didn't like Rosalie overall through all 4 books the first time I read them. Now I am reading them for a third time and I read Rosalies story and it was if I had not read it before. I felt sad for Rosalie and respected her knowing who she was as a person even if she was shallow and materialistic. I actually like Rosalie A LOT more now, really giving her story a good understanding. I don't fault her so badly for not liking Bella. Knowing what Breaking Dawn will bring, it makes me happy to know Rosalie.

I was indifferent toward Rose of the firt 3 books- when I read her story I felt extremly sorry for her, but after B.D., I don't think her selfish, vain, concieted person is justifiable at all

Yeah, same.

It totally makes sense cause she is so used to everyone liking her, and Edward never showed the slightest bit of interest.

Ok...at first I didn't like Rose. The way she seemed to hate Bella for no particular reason. Then Edward tells us that Rose is jealous of Bella, for being human. Well, that makes a little sense but not enough to explain the hatred. Then Rose votes no to Bella becoming a vampire and gives her reason. Once again that makes sense. The kicker was when Rose tells Bella her story. She tells Bella that the excuse Edward gave her for Rose's hate wasn't entirely true. Once I heard Rose's story I completely got Rose. I understood her and I began to like her. I mean her was a girl who from the time she was born probably was told she was the best, and the most beautiful. She got all the pretty, superficial things she wanted. She was engaged to the best man in the city and she thought life was great. And then she sees her friend (her plain, not rich friend) get married to a guy who her parents would never have thought suitable for her. She goes to there house and they are HAPPY. They have an adorable child and you can see the love they have for each other. Rose doesn't have that. And then her fiance rapes and murders her? OMG...poor girl. Then to wake up a vampire and to have the first available vampire you meet not be interested in you!!! Not to mention that she feels she will never be able to find love and most importantly never have children. THEN Rose broke my heart. In BD I was appaled at her. I could understand her wanting to help Bella have her baby but for her to completely disregard Bella's life and the pain and suffering Bella was going through. After that I lost respect for Rose. The one thing that solidified that was when Jake leaves when he thinks Bella is dead and he catches Rose playing with Renesmee "enjoying her stolen moment of motherhood". That disgusted me for some reason.
