FanMNM, here is the responses I got, this is from one friend who says it's good but not appropriate:
The answer is YES! It's a very harsh book. Graphic. It was my son's summer reading assignment as senior. He said it was good, but too graphic and definitely not appropriate for a fifth grader. It's gotten lots of praise for being an "honest" book, but that doesn't mean good or appropriate.
And another friend, who didn't like it and says it's not appropriate:
YES! I, personally, hated the book. There are lots of adult themes in the book including rape. If Fan needs titles, let me know I'll be more than happy to give her some.
So it seems that this book would not be appropriate for a 5th grader. If you would like me to ask for more 5-grade appropriate titles, let me know and I'll send her a note. Hope this helps FanMNM!

^^Yeah. we had this Book report project on it in English class, and one of the girls did hers on it. It sounds very graphic (as in, lots of people getting shot and beat up, not... dirty. The Taliban are in it!) and definetely NOT for little kids. I think there's some other book with a similar title that you might have been thinking of...
However, I think I will be reading it. It sounds very interesting.

Right now I'm on The Knife of Dreams- Robert Jordan.

^^Yeah, I need to read that. But it won't be nearly as good without all the violent zombie mayhem.
Still reading the Knife of Dreams.

I finished My Sister's Keeper. Now I'm reading The Tenth Circle.

I have become a Jodi Picoult addict. (strictly novels of course, not a weird stalkerish addict)
