i love love LOVE robert frost. i remember the first time i was introduced to him, it was 'assigned reading', but then it became pleasure reading. I hadn't thought about that poem in years...which is probably a good thing, because who likes to dwell on the way the world will end? (not i). And then eclipse brought it all back. i like the fact that his prose allows the reader to always interpret the poem in whichever way they feel is right. There's no wrong way to read it.

here is another of my favorites of his... and i feel it also plays into the whole bella/edward (gasp)/jacob relationship. especially the last 2 lines...

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

I absolutely love Robert Frost, and I had this poem memorized BEFORE I read Eclipse! (I know, I'm a nerd :D.) I really like this poem and it fits extremely well. My favorite of Frost's poems is "The Road Not Taken".

I have always liked the poem Fire and Ice by Robert Frost that is used in Eclipse. It is so true hate and apathy are equally deadly and would both suffice to kill someone, or at the very least mortally wound their heart. The relevance of the poem to the story, for me, has a lot to do with my interpretation of Fire and Ice which is basically that Frost is saying that the end of the world could come because of passion, hate, fire or the opposite, apathy, coldness, ice. Frost would side with fire (and this I think is fitting as he is a poet) but concedes that ice would also be great and would suffice. Bella's sheer passion for Edward could be overwhelming and possibly deady. On the other side the fact that she does not share the same love for Jake as he does for her (her cold sholder) might be the death of him. I think it is kind of funny how the two are turned around in that way (Edward the fire and Jacob the Ice) However, I have to say that my feelings concerning the relevance of the poem to the book are a little skewed since it has long been one of my favorites.

I loved it too. i usually like the quotations/poems used at the start of books.
Didn't mean to memorise it but it's always in my head too.
Although i sort of change the words around sometimes:

FIRE AND ICE
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some/(Others) say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if I had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

I love it
I haven't memorised it, but I know it quite well. I'm also pretty sure that the fire is Jacob, and the ice is Edward.
Not sure about the rest of the meaning though.

I actually had to memorize and study this poem in one of my high school English classes, so I was really excited when this was in the book!

I really love SM's choices of quotes in the books- this one particularly :D

When the English teacher is reciting Frost poetry after the first Jacob-Edward confrontation in Eclipse, I bet she was reciting Fire and Ice.
