Re: Twilight Speculation thread
Great to be back!
And I know the Denalis do carry on with the vegetarian lifestyle, but they didn't make it into the history books by spending time with the volturi, as Carlisle did, and I know that's nit-picking (spelling?), but I just don't want anyone else to have credit for what I feel should only be attributed to Carlisle.. I just don't see it..
Anyway, good to be back, see you all soon!

Re: Twilight Speculation thread
Okay here is another question. This discussion has been 'tooled' around in other threads what say you:
On the cover of Eclipse is a long, red satin ribbon; held together by its own thread. What do you think is the significance of the ribbon and the threads holding it tenously together?

For me, the ribbon symbolizes Bella's humanity- and how she's slowly losing it in favor of immortality as a vampire. So, her humanity is quite literally hanging on by a thread.

I was trying to think of some verbose, unnecessarily pedantic way of stating what you just said, Rings, but I guess there's not really much else to say. Thank you for sparing us all the lengthy diatribe I would no doubt have engaged in had you not preempted me in my answer to that question...
What about Breaking Dawn, and the Queen piece from chess?
I think that's what it is anyway, If I remember correctly..

LOL Gimp.
Hmm, Breaking Dawn. The pawn is Human Bella- weakest piece on the board, very vulnerable... The queen is Vampire Bella- the most flexible (some say most powerful) piece. They signify her transformation from human to vampire.
The chessboard itself alludes to the confrontation at the end of the book, showing how it's more of a battle of minds than an actual physical battle. It's also a symbol of Bella's journey from human to vampire- just like how a pawn can turn into a queen upon reaching the opposite side of the board.

Thank you gentlemen for taking this discussion to its logical ending.

Re: Twilight Speculation thread
I'm nit-picking again, but I don't give a crap...
Wasn't Bella's original role position in the story more like that of king than a pawn?
She was extremely important to the game, but virtually powerless.
I agree with you in the meaning of the cover, but still...

No, she started out as a "pawn"/human and then became the White Queen/vampire. The queen is the most powerful piece on the chess board, hence she was the most powerful and pivotal person on the battlefield if you will.who_needs_fangs? wrote:I'm nit-picking again, but I don't give a crap...

Re: Twilight Speculation thread
As far as the fact that seemingly unopposable forces were trying to eliminate her, and she was helpless to stop it, I would say that yes, bella was the king. But since, in keeping with chess terminology, kings can not become queens or any other piece on the board for that matter, she would have to be a pawn, since she was the most susceptible to harm, and not in any way important, except to Edward, and later Jacob, but she was definitely often in harm's way, and thus could have been a pawn, but with the amount of "pieces" she had defending her, she definitely bears resemblance to a king...
Good enough?

Re: Twilight Speculation thread
Yes, Gimpy, thank you.
Navarre, I've read the FAQs many times, and wasn't objecting to the fact she became a Queen. It was just the pawn vs. king deal, and having a chess-obsessed cousin, that irked me.
